The gerund looks like a verb in the ing-form but has the same function as a noun. You can use it by itself or within a sentence.
I like shopping.
I like shopping in Covent Garden.
Participle phrases almost look like the same – a verb in the –ing-form. But they are used as an adjective or an adverbial phrase to modify a noun or pronoun.
There's applause coming from over there!
Knowing London well you can really enjoy the atmosphere.
